Empire of Dust: 1000pt Army List and Miniatures/Modeling Musings

I'm on a new army binge apparently, and it's an interesting exercise to see what I can make for as cheaply as possible. I also work at a game store in my spare time, so having plenty of 1000pt armies for people to try isn't a bad idea.

List after the break:

Kings of War Army List: 1000pts
Empire of Dust (Evil): 1000pts
Infantry:
160pts - Skeleton Warriors Horde w/ Casket of the Damned
130pts - Mummies Troop w/ Casket of the Damned
130pts - Mummies Troop w/ Casket of the Damned

Large Infantry:
160pts - Enslaved Guardian Archers Regiment w/ Piercing Arrow

Large Cavalry:
155pts - Revenant Worm Riders Regiment w/ Maccwar's Potion of the Caterpillar

Heroes:
135pts - Cursed High Priest w/ Heal
120pts - Cursed High Priest

Aaah, Skeletons - the backbone of most Undead lists. Skeleton Warriors are a giant block of cheap, hardy attrition units, and with Surge, they are (potentially) a lot faster than they look. Backed up by 2 troops of Mummies (who hit like a pyramid's worth of bricks and can take some punishment to boot), a unit of non-surge-reliant Worm Riders as flankers, and some very good shooting from the Guardian Archers, this list is a nice complete package at 1000pts.

The Worm Riders get Maccwar's Potion as a matter of course, because I need something that can charge into terrain without being crippled. I had some leftover points, so I put Heal on the first priest (figuring, eh, why not? could be useful to recover from shooting hits before Lifeleech comes into play), and added a Piercing Arrow to the Enslaved Guardian Archers, allowing them to re-roll one missed to-wound roll. I wish there was a cheaper way to give them +1 to hit, but until they hit horde level, I doubt I'll be able to justify (or afford) the Brew of Keen-eyeness, so that will have to wait till the 1500pt level if I decide to upgrade the army.

Modeling:
As with the Forces of Nature, I'm building this army as cheaply as possible, since it's just something to test out ideas with. Reaper is a great resource for this, and produces some amazing models that are easy to modify or even just fit in as-is.

Skeletons:
After literally days of searching, I've found that the best priced skeleton minis out there are the Mantic ones. $50 for 40 models really is the best out there, and they look like they can be modded up pretty well for an Egyptian theme. Price-wise, I tried to find the Warlord Games Skeleton Warriors, but they appear to be out of production (at least temporarily).

I departed from the norm on this one and picked up a cheap set of skeletons on Amazon - $16 for 100 of em, I wasn't going to complain! However, after I received them, I figured out that they are about half again as large as normal Mantic/GW skeletons, so all in all... meh. The double-axe guys will be decent for my Mummies, however, once I figure out a way to green stuff some wrappings. The other really good options are either Mantic Mummies or these fine sculpts from Reaper, if (like me) you're only planning on having mummy troops.

For the Archers, I nabbed 2 of these guys, which I'm going to re-pose a little and give them javelins or bows in their right hands. This one was pretty difficult, since they're large infantry and they have crossbows, which are both hard to find in an Egyptian motif. The giant skeletons from the above $16 bag'o'oversized-skeletons wouldn't be a bad fit, either.

Okay, the easiest and best looking option for this is the oft-maligned Games Workshop Necropolis Knights, but for $100 for only three, I'm going to look elsewhere. Reaper makes a really good Purple Worm that's made it's way into a Bones cast, and it doesn't look too hard to mod a skeleton or two from the above giant bag'o'skeletons onto it.

For this one, I'll leave it up to you - just about any wizard, undead-with-robes, or fancy looking guy works (yes, I just linked 10 different really good options for this under $10 each...). I've settled on These Guys - they look fantastic, they fit the bill perfectly, and just... wow!

A close runner up was this fantastic mini, who will probably end up as an Ahmunit Pharaoh one day if I keep expanding the army.

Final Thoughts:
So, there we go. All told, this army will cost around $70, which is less ideal than the Forces of Nature army. Honestly, I'm hoping that Mantic comes out with some good Enslaved Guardians and skeleton archer models (or at least more affordable ones), since they have a surprisingly excellent and well priced Undead range already, and that would do a lot to complete the Empire of Dust set.

In terms of upgrading, I've already picked up this guy for a scorpion. Undead cavalry or chariots will be an issue without dipping into the GW range (so awesome looking! but so expensive!), but they're too good in the list to completely ignore.

We shall see how it turns out. Thanks again for reading!
